About High Security Printing Asia

The Regional Forum for Secure Document Technologies

The latest technologies and techniques in the production and issue of banknotes, ePassports, ID cards, visas and other secure documents across Asia.

The conference, which provides excellent networking opportunities alongside the programme and exhibition, is complemented by a number of social events, including a welcome cocktail reception and gala dinner.

Attendance at the Asian events is generally in the region of 300-350, with attendees not just from the region, but all parts of the globe. This provides an excellent opportunity to meet senior level decision makers in one location and will be of interest to those companies already working in, or looking to expand into, Asia Pacific region.

Government organisations are provided an attractive fee structure whilst Asia Pacific delegates who live and work in the region are also eligible for reduced rates.

High Security Printing™ Asia focuses on government-specified and issued documents, including currency, fiduciary documents, excise stamps, ID cards, e-passports, visas, vehicle documents and licences, with a particular emphasis on banknotes and the emerging technologies for ID and travel documents. As in previous events, speakers will be specialists in their field providing technical presentations, including some regional case studies. Running in tandem with the event will be a trade exhibition of approximately 30 exhibitors working in the currency, e-passport, smart card, authentication and related industries.

High Security Printing Asia is one of a trio of regional events from Reconnaissance, with its two sister events – High Security Printing Latin America and High Security Printing EMEA – also taking place annually, serving their respective regions.

Monday 4 December 2023 – Workshops

09:00 – 12:30- Operation Timerbrier- A Counterfeiters Fall from Glory

Kerre Corbin, Kerrency Ltd

A father and son team were sentenced in December 2022 after pleading guilty to manufacturing £977,000 worth of counterfeit banknotes. This is their story.

Learn how these counterfeiters used Dearneside Press, a legitimate printing business, to manufacture counterfeit Scottish banknotes. The counterfeit notes were printed at the shop, then taken to the son’s house to simulate all the security features. Three boxes of evidence were submitted for examination after the raid on both properties, but there was more to come. Sheets of counterfeit banknotes, inks, stamps, rolls of used and unused foil, dies for hot foil stamping machine, genuine pattern banknotes, crime scene photos, and computer files/images had to all be linked together for the six different counterfeit banknotes. Holograms, windowed threads, and UV patterns were simulated on UV dull paper. Amongst all the evidence was a huge surprise that Mr. Gaunt could not refute. A mammoth task, but it was all worth it!

09:00 – 12:30 – Identity Document Fraud in an Online Environment – The Challenges of Digital ID Verification

Michael van Gestel, Onfido

With the digital revolution of the 21st century, millennials, governments, and corporations have increasing requirements for self-service, quick and reliable document authentication remotely and at scale. The revolution is upon us and fraudsters have access to better technology, leaked data and a vast library of faces from social media.

This workshop will focus on the challenges global organisations deal with when trying to stop targeted attacks in a document not-present environment. During this interactive workshop we will share some of the latest fraud rings we have detected and the results of our research that can help you make better informed decisions regarding document authenticity in an online environment.

13:30 – 17:00 – Managing the Transition to Digital Payments

John Winchcombe, Reconnaissance Intl

The Asia-Pacific region is leading the world in its rapid transition from being mostly cash based to digital payments.  Governments, often actively supported by central banks, are actively encouraging this change in an endeavour to achieve benefits such as enabling economic growth, moving to the latest payment infrastructure and increasing financial inclusion.  Payment innovation is welcomed and, whether wholesale or retail, Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are part of this story.

The scale, speed and ambition of this change brings risks.  This seminar considers those risks and options to mitigate them.  The agenda will cover the landscape across Asia, who is doing what, the drivers for change, where the public is, the risks and what central banks around the world are doing to mitigate those risks.  An important part of the session will be considering how the decline of cash accelerates beyond a tipping point and the need both to identify this tipping point and to ensure cash can be maintained for those who need it.

13:30 – 17:00 – The Next Level – Mastering Machine Authentication

Jonathan Ward, Secura Monde International

The efficient handling of high volumes of banknotes requires machine handling to count, fitness check and authenticate the banknotes.  Machine readable security features have been included in banknotes, therefore, for many decades.

While banknotes have evolved, so have the machines that handle them.  Some have got bigger and faster, other machines have moved out of the central banks and become commonplace even into retail outlets.  As a result, the range and variety of security of machine readable features has also evolved.

Part of that change has been prompted by increasingly sophisticated and organised attacks on banknotes.  Driven by this, today we have not only ‘level 2’ machine readable security features designed for day to day use, but ‘level 3’ features which are highly secure, covert, central bank only features designed to deliver near forensic level authentication at speed and in volume.

As the increasing need for automation becomes ever more essential to reduce the cost of cash; and as the commercial sector takes increasing responsibility for the management of cash within the national cash cycle, so there is greater importance to ensure that the machine-readable elements on the physical banknote remain difficult for counterfeiters to reverse-engineer whilst being more reliable and effective – and, just as importantly, that the sensors on cash management equipment are more adept at interpreting the signal from these features so as to be able to sort and authenticate accurately at higher speeds.

This seminar will focus on the interaction between the machine-readable technologies on the market today – both those level 2 features used by the commercial sector, and the covert level 3 central bank features – to explore the importance of these technologies, their interface with cash automation sensors, banknote design implications, and how they should be adopted so as to ensure there is minimum disruption and cost to the commercial sector when new banknote designs are issued by the central bank.

The seminar will be run by Secura Monde International, security consultants specialising in the entire lifecycle of cash, with contributions from some of the leaders in cash cycle technology and solutions for level 2 and 3 security.
